Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. ("IHI") and Marubeni Corporation ("Marubeni") have been awarded a contract for the design and supply of equipment for a new cement plant under the contracting authority of Bim Son Cement Co., an affiliation of Vietnam National Cement Corporation. The project was established in an effort to meet the country's growing demand for cement, arising from Vietnam's strong and continued economic growth.

Total value of the contract is approximately JPY15.0 billion, and completion is expected within 2009. Financing for the project is based upon funding by Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), for which 'Buyer's Credit' is considered.

The new plant has a capacity of around 5,500t/d, and is situated beside existing plants located in Thanh Hoa province, 150km south of Hanoi. The two existing plants were designed and constructed in the 1980's, based upon Russian technology. During 2003, IHI and Marubeni collaborated to perform modification work to one (of the two) existing plants, transforming its capacity from 1,750t/d to 3,500t/d.

Under the new Contract, IHI and Marubeni are responsible for the design and supply of equipment comprising a complete cement plant, which will include raw material grinding section; cement grinding section; clinkering line section, as well as packaging and dispatch facilities.

International tender of the project induced predominantly European and Japanese competitors, among which the IHI and Marubeni collaboration were ultimately successful. IHI and Marubeni were awarded due to its experience and expertise in the field of cement plants, as well as its technical capabilities as demonstrated by successful completion of the aforementioned modification work.

Among the South-East Asian countries, Vietnam has been showing notably significant economic growth. Projects concerned with development of Infrastructure, such as cement plants; power plants; roads and bridges are highly prevalent. IHI and Marubeni are actively seeking to follow such opportunities, and plan to remain focused on the Vietnamese market.
